The Power of Being Hidden While Healing

By

Hidden but not forgotten…

2 Samuel 10:4–5 (NIV)

“So Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved off half of each man’s beard, cut off their garments in the middle at the buttocks, and sent them away… When David was told about this, he sent messengers to meet the men, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, ‘Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back.’”

There are seasons in life when you feel pulled back from visibility.

You are not where you used to be.
You are not fully where you are going.
You feel unseen, quiet, maybe even forgotten.

And if you are honest, it can feel uncomfortable.

You wonder:

  • Why am I here?
  • Why does everything feel paused?
  • Why does it seem like everyone else is moving forward?

But Scripture shows us something powerful:

Not every hidden season is a setback.

Some are a covering.

A Devotional Reflection

In 2 Samuel 10, David’s men were humiliated publicly. Their dignity was stripped, and they were sent away in shame.

But David did something that reflects both wisdom and care.

He did not call them back immediately.
He did not force them to return while still exposed.

He told them:

Stay in Jericho until you are restored.

That instruction was not rejection.

It was protection.

It was dignity.

It was understanding that healing sometimes requires space away from public view.

A Teaching Reflection

David’s decision reveals something many people overlook:

Healing and restoration are not always meant to happen in front of others.

There are moments when stepping away is not weakness—it is wisdom.

Those men were still valued.
Still chosen.
Still part of David’s army.

But they were given time to recover before re-entering public life.

This teaches us:

  • God may allow you to step back to restore your strength
  • Not every season is meant to be visible
  • Privacy can be part of the healing process

Hidden does not mean forgotten.

It means God is working where others cannot see.

Healing Application

If you are in a season where things feel quiet, slow, or unseen, do not rush out of it prematurely.

You may be healing from:

  • disappointment
  • rejection
  • emotional wounds
  • spiritual exhaustion

And healing takes time.

There is no need to perform while you are still recovering.

There is no need to prove strength while you are still rebuilding.

God may be allowing you space so that when you return, you do so with restored confidence—not hidden pain.

Your value has not changed.

Your calling has not disappeared.

Your season has simply shifted.

A Closing Truth

The men in 2 Samuel 10 were not dismissed.

They were delayed for restoration.

And when the time was right, they returned.

God does the same with us.

He does not expose what He intends to heal.

He does not rush what needs restoration.

If you feel hidden, trust this:

You are not forgotten.

You are being prepared.

Prayer

Lord, help me trust You in seasons where I feel hidden.
Remind me that being unseen does not mean being forgotten.
Give me patience while You heal what others cannot see.
Restore my confidence, my strength, and my peace.
And when the time is right, bring me forward renewed and whole.
Amen.
